Introduction

Human Papillomavirus Immunisation vaccines prevent cervical cancer, genital warts and unusual cancers. HPV vaccines have been developed; however, there are certain factors and important elements that have not been considered by the people who have developed it. the most important are the elements of sexual orientation. These factors have not been considered and this is causing negative impact on the health of girls. The price of the vaccines is also very high due to which not everyone can afford it.

Thesis statement

The view of HPV vaccines is similar in both the authors as they oppose the view of usage of HPV vaccines, although the reasons are different. Colgrove has opposed the usage of HPV vaccines because of the price this vaccine carries. According to the author, it is very expensive and not every American can afford it. On the other hand, Mishra & Graham have opposed it because they say that the vaccine has been developed without considering the clinical and sexual facts.

Summary of the Articles

The two primary sources used for this paper is 1) the study conducted by Mishra and Graham (2011) in their article “Risk, choice and the 'girl vaccine': Unpacking human papillomavirus (HPV) immunisation” and 2) is the study conducted by Colgrove (2006) in his article “Immunity for the People: The Challenge of Achieving High Vaccine Coverage in American History”. Mishra and Graham (2011) main claims in the article include a lot of opposition on the HPV vaccines. The external factors related to the population health knowledge and techniques are highly correlated with the state power that it exercise over the citizens. The state by enforcing the certain techniques and knowledge can greatly enforce the citizens. According to the author the approaches to HPV immunistaion is drawn on the basis and approaches of disciplinary technologies and governmentally. HPV immunization is highly significant in science studies approach for the surveillance and control of bodily risks. The article mentions that the HPV immunization is insignificantly correlated with the people's engagements in risk reduction of products because it interrogates the individuals in the form of questioning their own beliefs and sexualities, their own bodies and of their own children. The HPV immunization renders further risks of anxiety and contestation through these engagement projects such as by the marketing of the medicines such as Gardasil and Cervarix which renders the outcome other than simple information and knowledge acquisition.

The reception of new medication especially the new vaccines for the HPV is rather risky and complex as it contains the interplay of variety of diverse fields such as healthcare politics, marketing and promotional practices, science, social perceptions towards usage of vaccines and finally the media representations of those vaccines. This is significant with various interrelated factors and not just marketing and knowledge awareness because vaccines as compared to therapeutic drugs because the later involves targeting the active condition of disease whereas the former involves the targeting to the absent disease conditions.
