Biological responses, such as physical or psychological, derive emotions. However, culture plays a role in shaping up the way emotions are derived too. The most relevant theories of emotion, which consider the roles of biology and culture, are discussed.

Short-lived physiological and psychological phenomena representing efficient adaptation to environmental changes are termed as emotions. Both biology, in terms of facial expressions, and culture, in terms of traditions and beliefs, influence the human emotion system. (Levenson, 1999)
