Introduction
The role of women in the middle Ages was undoubtedly connected with the church. And having a look at that period shows that it was one of the toughest time faced by Europe. It is called the middle age because this was the period between the downfall of the Roman Empire and the period before called the Renaissance. This period is also known as the Dark Ages. This continued from 1066 to 1485.

The role of the women during the Middle Ages was of all due respect. They were usually connected with the churches. Because during that time church was not only the body that offered religious beliefs but it was the governing body which handled all the issues and maintained an ideal moral of living standards. It comes to the knowledge that the women from the earliest time were of high respect amongst the Celtic and Teutonic people, which created a foundation for the Christianity attitude of virginity, marriage and impartiality of sexes could be based upon. Polygamy was not that known but monogamy was commonly practiced in this era, which is single marriage for the lifetime in a person's life, especially among the Northmen and the Danes. The church continued the regulation as all these nations were then converted into Christianity. The rule of monogamy was implemented which made divorce and marriages more difficult, to keep an ongoing relationship that could not be finished, other than by the law.
A general perspective
There is general perspective of people that the society that follows the rule of monogamy, the women is treated with lot of care and respect. But we should be able to differentiate among the idolatry affects that was followed by the chivalry practice and the equalities that was maintained according to the church. There body of the church held certain rules for the equality of the women, as they marriages, remarriage, divorce and kinships were meant to be sacred, but sometimes misused for striving purposes. All these showing the powerful places of women in the society and the way they were raised during that era since they played an important role.
The stronger attachment that the women had with church, the clergy offered them more protection and rights, because of that the men grew more barbarous which led to the sympathies from the clergy for the women. The clergy thought it was better to protect the women since they were more cultured, deserved more piety and practiced more religion rather than the misbehaved soldiers whose work was only war. The women also reflected more music and literature. There can be no better example than the strong bonding of the women and the church.
