How can an “ergonomics approach” reduce the potential for major disasters?
Abstract
The study is based on the ergonomics approach whose major focus is on the reduction of the prospective for major disasters like Hillsborough Stadium Disaster. The officials responsible for the disaster should know that the ergonomics is the science and occupational health and safety practice. The work place conditions for Hillsborough Stadium disaster indicate that the most apparent workplace issue was a communication problem. Decision making was ineffective and slow that guides anxiety. Moreover, the errors that relate to communication were the key aspects of the Hillsborough stadium disaster. Besides it, the good quality of technical measures does not guarantee the achievement of high safety effects that can reduce the potential for major disasters.

Introduction
The study focuses on the ergonomics approach which particularly emphasizes on the reduction on the potential for major disasters. Moreover, the ergonomics approach is discussed in relation to Hillsborough Stadium Disaster, which took place on 15th April 1989. This disaster is considered as the most terrible football disaster in history of United Kingdom. Nottingham Forest and Liverpool fans travelled to Hillsborough, Sheffield Wednesday's ground for watching the FA Cup semi-final game. But, a series of failures and errors led to ninety six people losing their lives because of the overcrowding in the west terrace.
It is found that several factors put in to the disaster at Hillsborough, some of which could be localized in the police control room. For that reason, the importance in the series of events, the police control room was the centre of attention in the Hillsborough Stadium Disaster.
Method
In order to reduce the potential for major disasters, the ergonomics approach is an important and crucial factor that should be in consideration for the events like Hillsborough Stadium disaster, for that reason, it is imperative to consider the following, while considering the ergonomics approach regarding potential major disaster:
Most of the dangers in modern equipment and work organization are hidden which also include the stadiums like Hillsborough Stadium that is they are not directly, and clearly visible even for cautious people.
The issue of security is clearly indicated in the statute of the International Ergonomic Association.
Ergonomics is the science and occupational health and safety practice.
Ergonomics should support the results of their study of the practical protection.
The objectives of ergonomics are similar to those in the science of safety.
An important aspect of the social application of ergonomics is associated with better health and safety at work.
Another aspect of the social use ergonomics to ease the work and improve the well-being and productivity.
Application of ergonomics also has political significance. The importance of this becomes apparent when the police control room observed the reactions of the plant management efforts on improving working conditions and safety. Such efforts are immediately noticed and commented on favourably by employees.
