Writing systems comprise of Alphabets in which each symbol represents a speech sound (See phonetics). Many pictographic writing systems developed as far as ideography and even syllabaries, but the breakthrough to true alphabetic phonetic writing took place, it seems, only on the E shores of the Mediterranean around 2000 BC (Daniels & Bright, Pp. 13-44). This paper discusses the history of alphabets in a holistic context. Moreover, the paper primarily focuses on Greek and Latin based vocabulary.
