Hispanic American Diversity

Introduction

The four Hispanic groups, which we will, be discussing in this paper, are Mexican Americans, Central and South Americans, Cuban Americans and Puerto Ricans. In this paper, we will be discussing their linguistic, political, social, economic, religious, and familial conventions or statuses (Shell, 2009). Cultural identity is a dynamic and complex sense of belonging to one or many cultural groups, including values, attitudes and meanings that are associated with it. It defines how individuals position themselves or identifies themselves relationship to various cultural contexts in which they live, as their group ethnicity and country of residence.

Cultural diversity

Cultural diversity is particularly important in situations of change and / or contact with other groups. When individuals or groups come into contact with members of other cultures, they are so aware of the differences between them. In multicultural contexts, people learn to negotiate differences in various areas such as home, school and work (Marcus, 2007). Migrants and minority groups are customary multicultural contexts; they face not only cultural differences but are more often considered inferior. Such situations can lead to confusion or even an identity crisis, while that the individual tries to understand how to integrate into an environment where its person and / or culture are not understood and / or respected. Cultural diversity has raised controversies, judgments, prejudices, not very different from those who invested at the time the Hispanic world, especially in its American component. The profiles of cultural identity (ethnic, national, bicultural, blur) grow while that individuals explore and negotiate the issues raised by practices and values cultural backgrounds. This is essentially when they are trying to find their place in the world, when they are adolescents or adult that takes place shaping their cultural identity.

While originally the villagers were defeated (Battle of Tavapy) gradually different countries under Spanish rule became independent as well as Brazil from Portugal, Spain maintained control over Puerto Rico and Cuba until 1898 and most Caribbean countries independence during the twentieth century (Lopez, 2011).
