HERMAN BLUMGART

Herman Blumgart (1895-1977) was the physician in chief at Beth Isreal Hospital

Herman Blumgart

In 1925, Hermann Blumgart presented the first diagnostic procedure using radioactive signs on humans; this first is well recognized. Less well identified is the detail that Blumgart and his coworker Otto C. Yens, then a health scholar, evolved the first instrumentation used in a diagnostic method engaging radioactive indicators. The instrumentation, a changed Wilson cloud sleeping room, turned out to be the detector most apt for their purpose. Blumgart also displayed amazing foresight in explaining the requirements both for a satisfactory sign (tracer) and for a satisfactory detector—requirements that still contain factual today. The Blumgart-Yens changed cloud sleeping room was the birth of nuclear surgery instrumentation.

If one takes a nearer gaze at one of the best renowned of all radiotracer trials on humans, the well-known study of arm-to-arm circulation time (1) finished by Hermann L. Blumgart and his coworker Otto C. Yens in 1925, a new insight emerges. Hermann Ludwig Blumgart (1895-1977), seating of the Department of Medicine at Beth Israel Hospital from 1928 to 1962, was an early support of 131I treatment of cardiac infection in euthyroid patients. Historical anecdotes variously mark his arm-to-arm circulation estimation as body-fluid flow or body-fluid velocity. Blumgart really assessed circulation time (in seconds) and not what we would today call body-fluid flow (in mL/s or mL/min) or body-fluid velocity (in cm/sec). Otto Christian Yens (1901-1969), as a first- or second-year health scholar, aided in the development and building of the changed cloud chamber. Yens had a backdrop in physiology; he subsequent became a pediatrician. As we all understand, this was the first diagnostic radiotracer, or radioindicator, method finished on a human—the first atomic surgery procedure. But there is more to it than that: It was furthermore the birth of ...
