Health care is defined as “the prevention, treatment and management of illness and disease, and ensure mental and physical well being through the services offered by the medical and allied health professionals”. In the first world countries healthcare responsibilities of masses rest with the individual. In the United States, government is running many health programs for public. The established body for ensuring provision of public health care is known as the US department for human and health services. As per the data of world health organization (WHO), the United spends greatest fraction of its GDP on public health as compared to any other country, that is, approx 15.2 %.
In order to provide best health care services to the public, the Unites states has made it very procedural and documented. The provisions of health care, whether by private sector or the state; it has to follow a detailed procedure which encompasses the following procedural stages:
Licensure, certification and accreditation standards
They have different quality, access and reimbursement
They have to abide by federal legislation and programs
The paper discusses three healthcare programs which contribute to generate enormous revenue for the provisions of health care by the state; they are; Medicare, Tricare, and Indian Health Services. The paper discusses each of the programs in detail. It discusses the status of each program, as well as, the provisions under that program. It analyses how each of the afore-mentioned programs, is affected by the procedures of licensure, certification and accreditation standards. It discusses the quality of each program, the way it is reimbursed and convenience regarding access of patients and the support of program to Nationwide Health Information Network (NHIH) guidelines. The paper also elaborates the role of health informatics and the role of informatics professionals in each program, as well as, the impact of federal government programs on health informatics. In the end paper presents recommendation regarding changes needed.
The paper is an attempt to conduct thorough analysis of health programs by the US federal government and the role of health informatics to parallel the evolving change over the time. It is a research based analysis of the federal health programs of United States government with facts and recommendations, one by one.
