Equality and diversity a term used in Britain for the identification and protection of equality, diversity and human rights as defining values ??of society. UK legislation requires public authorities to promote equality in everything you do; you should also ensure that other organizations to meet their legal obligations to ensure equality in the time to do it themselves. In the UK there are certain legal requirements in accordance with current legislation to ensure equality in the field of disability, gender and race (Hart, 2006, 21).

The promoting of equality is a very important issue in the social sector. Equality in health and social care settings means the right for all staff and patients to be treated as equals. All should treat each other, as they themselves would like to be treated. The main reason inequality exists is the misunderstanding by today's society towards diversity (Hart, 2006, 21).

Diversity can be anything different from the classic norm, and can be used in the forms of age, race, religion, sexual orientation as well as many other, equally unfair, reasons. This misunderstanding causes labelling. This is when others judge people due to their own individual differences; this means people label them into a certain category (Hart, 2006, 21).

Inequalities in health and social care settings can cause various problems for both patients and staff. These problems include the feeling of embarrassment shy or withdrawn behavior, some patients may get better or faster personal attention due to favoritism. Problems include only allows some officers to treat patients according to age, experience, race, religion or gender, there are many other reasons, it can happen, but it can also cause serious problems in the health centers (Hart, 2006, 21).

All these problems can occur for many reasons, whether it be education, environment, or simply lack of education. This is the main reason for promoting equality urgent matter in today's society. Through education and the promotion of equality of many of these stereotypes that such labeling and prosecution may be slowly but surely eliminated.

In today's society there are many different forms of discrimination, from issues of race, ability and even age. One highly publicised story in today's society is concerning the television reality programme “Big Brother”. Two of the contestants, Jade Goody and Shilpa Shetty, have been surrounded in controversy over a race row that has even ended up being talked about in parliament.(Waugh & Davis, 2007) “Shilpa has been mocked by Jade and others over her food, accent and her behaviour. Jade backtracked and apologised to Shilpa. Shortly after calling Shilpa “Poppadom” and “Shilpa F***awala”. Yet when jade was confronted by Big Brother she said “If I have offended any Indians out there I apologise.” Speaking to Shilpa she said “I didn't say it in a racial way. I do not judge people by the colour of their skin.” In this article there are many issues of discrimination, labelling, and stereotyping.
