Happy Endings

Introduction

The story shows the different times of events that occur in life; lust, love, hate, sadness, heartache, deception that are the building blocks to what life is. Atwood's main point to the story is that no matter what you encounter in life whether it is any of the dramas, life will always end the same in death. Margaret Atwood's story "Happy Endings” shares the mix-and-match elements of what can happen when societies evolve towards war or peace, stagnation or innovation, force or consensus. Atwood embraces reality and settles once and for all the misconception of how life is supposed to be pure bliss was placed in our minds at a young age. Throughout life, relationships are perfectly blissful (for a short unrealistic time, anyway), unfaithful, heartbreaking, and empowering (Atwood, pp.483-485).

Discussion

The same characters are used throughout, as stated before. Each scenario brings a different side of a character. By keeping the same characters, Atwood can show that a few minor changes can make a drastic change in one's life. A characters situation, age, and or importance may change throughout. The story Happy Endings doesn't follow the storyline that one might think, because of the title. Behind this story is a meaning. The meaning of life, that in the end of life everyone dies, no matter what. The author displays this well within her story by explaining different relationships. Through different relationships and developing the true meaning, she shows a writing style that keeps the reader, and wanting to know what's next. She seems to believe in keeping the reader interested by letting them wonder what is going to happen next. To me, her stories not only have a fun beginning, but also a formidable ending.
