Why did Haiti suddenly gain so much attention from the world's media?
It's amazing how the mass media can generate justly deserved sympathy so quickly. What would the world be like if they would do this more often. Look at how quickly things could be addressed resolved were the public to not stick its heads in the sand and if the media would just do its damn job.
Haiti is getting an out pour of charity and media attention that it has desperately needed for decades. Let's not let the awareness or activism end there. Don't let it be like Tibet a couple years ago when the press hyped it up for a few weeks and then let it fade away into the background behind some hot celebrity gossip.
This is proof of what the mass media could do and positive ness it could generate was is to give a damn. No one is to blame for an earthquake so for once it's safe to report. Other forms of oppression, poverty, virtual slavery etc are more complex with powerful interests standing to lose. Some of these interests are currently and sickeningly taking advantage of the Haitian disaster to militarize the island and gobble up its resources, implement long term un-payable debts, and set up a defacto take over.
The isolationism and hostile take over by US marines, the brutal effects of mercantilism and the tragic past of Haiti's sad history need to be acknowledged and changed. Haiti was barely hanging on a thread before the earthquake. Don't let this passion fade away in a few weeks when reporting switches to something else. Stay engaged and active and try not to push away political "nerds" who devote time to their own detriment to dig up and try to inform others of these types of ills. Let's work together to end this unbelievable selfishness and immorality. Kill the IMF and mercantile practices. In the meantime, carefully, and with research assure your money or clothing donations etc are getting to where they need to go.
Media's Interest in reporting people's suffering in earthquake-hit Haiti
In spite of power outages and interruptions in phone service, and generally poor access to Internet in Haiti, citizen media reports of the earthquake are coming in, with blogs, photos, Twitter, phone, mapping platforms, and streaming video and radio all being used to report conditions.
One thing you might not be aware of is the role that technology -particularly new media - has played in providing information on the ever-changing conditions in the country.
As a result of the destruction of the phone lines on the island, it was difficult to know how widespread the damage by the earthquake was. However, the network infrastructure survived making it possible to communicate via the web and Haitians in the Diaspora were able to check on the well-being of their relatives back home.
