Introduction
An information system (IS) is a set of elements geared to the treatment and management of data and information for later use. Its key components include people, procedures and data. All these elements interact to process the data (including manual and automated processes) and give rise to information, distributed in the most appropriate way possible in a given organization, depending on your goals (Morris & Strickland 2008). In computing, an information system is any system of computers used to collect, store, manipulate, manage, control, process, transmit or receive data to satisfy a need for information. In this paper, I give the background about an IS problem faced by Green Gopher Pty Ltd, a lawn and garden equipment manufacturer and distributer.
Background of Green Gopher Pty Ltd and the I/S problem
Green Gopher manufactures and distributes lawn and garden maintenance equipment in
Australia. Green Gopher has been caught out. Problems at various points along the supply chain have meant they have not been able to deliver on time and hence they are losing market share. Green Gopher has asked VUIS to investigate changes that they can make to better prepare for the supply of units for the upcoming spring and summer sales.
System Specifications
The inventory management system is a real-time inventory database capable of connecting multiple stores. This can be used to track the inventory of a single store, or to manage the distribution of stock between several branches of a larger franchise (Cetinkaya & Lee 2000). However, the system merely records sales and restocking data and provides notification of low stock at any location through email at a specified interval.
