Greek developed faster as compared with the rest of Europe. The permanent settlement, called Polis, came much earlier than it would have anywhere else. The Greek cities dominated much of Southern Europe and were a source of established colonies. They also functioned as centers of trade: trade takes place in very remote areas between Polis and settlements were created as a way-station.
