Introduction

Citizenship has been assumed to remain in an uneasy relationship with globalization. This idea is intuitively reasonable. The community in which people live, the organization that is embedded in the geographically bounded state and got recognition from the rest of the nations is all responsible for the derivation of citizenship. Globalization, on the other side could be realized as a phenomenon having a number of dimensions s including politics, economy, socio culture and technology (Croucher & Sheila L., 2004). The inter connection of all these dimensions give shape to the broader globalization concept. This term paper is written with an objective to explore the way globalization is bringing about an impact on the citizenship by taking into account a number of manifestations associated with it.

Across the national boundaries, nations keep on moving people, goods, ideas and services. However, the globalization references at present have brought to light the changes that are being brought about in this movement. Globalization has now become an increased interconnectedness phenomenon which demonstrates an increased movement of goods, people, ideas and services with the help of traditional and new channels. The resultant is in the form of increasingly complex relationship of citizen and nation state.

Reasons for Globalization

The global spread of free enterprise system (that is capitalism) is one of the major causes of the current globalization. Among other factors are the production functions internationalization and the advancement in the communications technology. The scholars vary on the opinion of what globalization is; however, they all agree on a point that it involves distortion of boundaries. The changes that are brought about by globalization are not only limited to the economic, political and cultural dimensions. In addition, globalization is not only related to expansion of the independence of the already existing entities or the growth of the existing flows, but it also brings about facilitation in the creation of new ideas and entities.

Although globalization is an old phenomenon, the rapid assault brought by it upon the nation is new. The globalization is transforming and will continue to shape the extent to which the state ship is sovereign.

Impact of Globalization on Citizenship

The status of the citizens within a particular territory is defined by the nation states. Every nation states is allowed by the international law to determine its definition of citizen, thus citizenship provides the means to decide the exclusion and entitlement of the nation to determine its composition. The citizens have the rights and responsibilities that solely belong to them. These include the right of casting vote, responsibilities toward the nation, the legal system, defense of the nation at the time of challenges and wars, rights associated with the freedom to live in a country. Globalization will continuously prove to have an impact on each of these core rights and responsibilities.
