Introduction

The paper is designed to sketch the Gender Roles in Marriages between the short story “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” by James Thurber and a one-act play “The Proposal” by Anton Chekhov. Both of the writings serve their efforts in keeping the theme of gender roles in marriages in different literary figures. The short story is narrative piece of work, which provides the complete description about characters, plot, theme, and final lesson. At contrast, a one-act play contains only one act and does not hold a series of the act and scenes in the entire drama. In modern days, the play of ten minute called Flash Drama has got the emerging popularity of one-act play, particularly in writing style. One-act play is basically derived from the concept of ancient time drama. The comparison and contrast of both literary pieces defines the ultimate zone of marriage and the kinds of complexities and gender roles towards it. Gender roles are the attitudes, behaviors, values that are contained by males and females in society. These conventional gender roles apply to marriage in general and a married life; therefore, it is significant to understand about its key role in society. The role of gender is a major function in the quality of a marriage and how people want their ideal marriage to be. The comparison of texts written on the same theme of gender roles in marriage by two different writers with two different perspectives provides the chance for the better analysis of the similarities and dissimilarities between both these literary samples. In the play “The Proposal” reflects the deliberation of property and even our pleasure in property that dominates other emotions and feelings like those generally linked with marriage and love. Marriage is a beautiful relation that should be built on honesty, love and trust, but in the play, marriage is motivated by economic thoughtfulness instead of emotions (Senelick & Laurence, 1985). The characters of the play are argumentative in nature and always found busy in debating instead of reaching the original objective. Ivan Vassiliyitch Lomov and Stepan Stepanovitch Tschubukov were the good neighbors of each other and Natalia was the daughter of Stepan. Ivan is a 35 years old man who wants to get married with Stepan's daughter. He thought Natalia was not a bad looking girl and also good at farm work, so he planned to propose her for marriage.
