Gender Roles

Introduction

According to Eckes and Traunter, (2000) gender is a categorization of human beings on the basis of male and female. Different cultures have different socializing, interacting and interpersonal groups that include groups of boys and girls, men and women, and male and females. These groups define different roles to different categories or on the basis of their gender. Culture is the way of life followed by the group of people over a long period of time. In different cultures people have different expectations from gender groups like male and females. People on the basis of gender relate different thoughts, behaviors and feelings to males and females. Gender is among the three bases along with race and age on the grounds of which people do discrimination in societies. The research will be conducted on the theories that describe gender roles in a society and how people belonging from different cultures perform socially on the basis of the cultures. The restriction of resources will limit the research and the data of the research will be collected from the secondary resources that include: books and journal publications. The unavailability of time becomes the biggest factor on relying more on the secondary data instead of primary data because to gather data from questionnaires and surveys need a lot of time.

There are several factors due to which people's thought, feelings and behavior change towards a particular gender. The factors are self-concept, intrinsic and extrinsic attitudes, ideologies and etc. The other social influence is the attitude, behavior and feelings of each gender different from each other which enable people to identify each individual separately. The individuals belonging from different genders have different dimensions of their personality which are not similar, thus different gender groups need to be developed as per different personality traits. Gender leads towards social motivation that has an impact on the perception, judgment and behavior of the people. For example people talk politely with female citizens and may be a little loud while talking to male citizens. For example people give respect to women and may apply the universal rule of ladies first. In many cultures females are treated ...
