CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION

Background

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been able to dominate world's oil market effectively for many years. This was made possible because KSA has produced and exported a bulk quantity of crude oil, which is a worthy globally traded product (Shaahid & El-Amin, 2009). The dominance of KSA remained intact because it maintained a surplus capacity of crude oil in its bank that proved as a strategic cushion in situations when things resulted to be tough. Lately, the demand for the export was shortened due to the financial crises in the region and the development of oil reservoirs and supply prospects in the United States and Canada as technology intervened into the sector.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia considers energy as the source of life. The region relies on supply of crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs) in international market to cover up 80 percent of its international revenue (Nashawi et al. 2010). The region has invested heavily in the past and presently in energy generation to make the most of the riches and view it as economic and strategic. Thus, the efforts of the government surely provides the evidence that the future of KSA relies heavily on energy and it will make all possible efforts to make the future of energy better.

Research Questions

Following are the research question for this study:

RQ1: What are the methods used for energy generation in Saudi Arabia?

RQ2: What is the policy or strategy of Saudi Arabia considering the future of energy?

RQ3: What are the potential threats for the future of energy in Saudi Arabia?

RQ4: Can the energy sector further boost the economical condition of Saudi Arabia in the future?

Aims and Objectives

The aim of this dissertation is to study the future of energy in Saudi Arabia:

To determine the methods that are used for energy generation in Saudi Arabia

To explore the policy or strategy of Saudi Arabia considering the future of energy

To evaluate the potential threats for the future of energy in Saudi Arabia

To find out whether the energy sector can further boost the economical condition of Saudi Arabia in the future or not

Outline of the Dissertation

This research will focus on Future of Energy in Saudi Arabia. The study comprises of the following sections:

The first chapter introduces the topic of the research and provides the background, research scope, aims and objectives, research questions and time scale for the study.

The second chapter provides the appropriate and significant literature review for the selected research topic that signifies the past study in this field.

The third chapter provides a general idea about the research methodology that has been selected for this research. The methodology mainly includes; the research design, data collection method, ethical considerations for the research.
