How Frederick W Taylor Earned His Reputation as the Father of Scientific Management

Introduction

The name of Frederick W. Taylor is remembered in golden words in the field of management sciences due to his unprecedented and remarkable contribution. His approaches were different in technique, emphasis and application but its objective was the same i.e. continuous improvement of a merchandise or service. Frederick W. Taylor is the first one to try to use new approaches to evolve the work of untrained employees in industrial associations. Due to his general approach of enquiry and submission of some fundamental concepts to personal work, he was bestowed the title of “father of scientific management. Applying Frederick W. Taylor's theories to the healthcare management can be equally beneficial as the concept of his production theories which can help improving healthcare services in their quality.

Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856 - 1915) was born in Pennsylvania in quite a prosperous family belonging to the profession of lawyer. Even in his youth he was fascinated by scientific research, exploration and experimentation endowed with a passion for improvements and bug fixes things based on facts and too early for her age was sorry for what - the lack of a better way. Taylor pioneered the time and motion studies to determine the “one best way” to achieve the fastest, most efficient, and least fatiguing production methods. Workers are conceptualized as interchangeable parts of a large, impersonal production machine. Scientific management received its greatest public sector attention when Frederick Taylor in 1912 presented its core principles to the U.S. House of Representatives. He focused on the duties of management, which include (a) relying on more systematic methods of measuring and managing work elements rather than on rule-of-thumb methods; (b) determining strategies to select, develop, and place workers in their roles in order to achieve optimal production; (c) determining ways to achieve cooperation among workers to fully implement scientific management principles and procedures; and (d) developing logical divisions of worker and manager roles and responsibilities. Classical organization theory evolved from these elements.
