Introduction

Published in 1769, The Monk by Matthew Lewis is recognized as one of the early gothic novels. The novel attempts to disregards all the boring and dull attribute to the classic novels by focusing on entertainment as well as a well define plot in the novel. Due to the 18th century language and writing style, it is not easy for most of the readers to understand the novel easily, however the novel is acknowledged as entertaining version of classic literature. This paper in connection to the novel; The Monk will identify and discuss four gothic elements. However, it has been claimed that the book almost contain every element of gothic literature; like the bad weather, haunted castles, ghostly apparitions, ancient monasteries, shadowy crypts, fortune telling gypsies, magic, witchcraft, am evil prioress, evil pacts and dungeons filled with darkness. The novel was considered one of the most controversial of all novels at that time; the reason beyond its image is explained with its themes like rape, violence, murder, torture and incest.

The Monk is one of the classic work of gothic literature because of the novel was written covering every element of gothic literature. The novel discusses the story of a priest Ambrosio, while criticizing the hypocrisy that was prevailing in the Catholic Church during the 17th century period.
