Theme

The film Thelma & Louise, conducted in 1991 by the American director, Ridley Scott tells the story of Thelma and Louise, two friends who embark on a journey that will change their destiny and, at the same time, break all the stereotypes that so far have been constructed image of women as passive victims of patriarchal society. The first sequence, shown by a parallel montage, describes the characters. Louise is a more mature woman, skeptical, which is working in a crowded bar and Thelma, who is cooking for her husband, is a full time homemaker. Two antagonistic characters at first, fed each other as the film progresses.

One day they decide to take a road trip to get away from everyday problems. At one point in their journey they stop at a roadside bar where Thelma uses alcohol and innocently flirts with a man. He tries to rape her in the parking lot and Louise appears to save her. In the vulgarity and provocation of man, Louise shoots him in the chest and kills him. Subsequently refuses to go to the police, thinking that would not be believed and decide to go to Mexico.

The journey then becomes a desperate flight. Louise calls Jimmy (her boyfriend) to ask him to send money and this tells to pick up the rotation to Oklahoma. On the way they meet a hitchhiker JD young rebel who asked for a ride to Oklahoma, but Louise refuses to meet with him and later in the road will invite into the car.

When they get there, Jimmy is Louise boyfriend who has taken the money and takes the opportunity to ask her to marry him; she rejects considering the situation and tells him what happened in the future. While Louise spends the night with Jimmy, Thelma sleeps with JD, who ultimately steals the money. Both players try to reach Mexico, but are pursued by a squadron of police cars and finally seeing no escape whatsoever, decide to rush through the canyons of the Colorado with the car and died on the spot. So, this film stands as a defense of feminism, which seeks to highlight the female image at the expense of men.
