Film Analysis: “Hotel Rwanda”

Introduction

“Hotel Rwanda” is a very accurate depiction of actions and thoughts of Paul during the approximately 100-day test in the 1994 Rwanda genocide. In the film Paul has served as a special consultant to United Artists and Lions Gate Films production, and he was there during the shooting process to voice their opinions and advice.

Discussion

The film provides a better understanding of the suffering and feelings of the people of Rwanda during the crisis. Instead of reading the bare facts from books or newspapers, films show using color, light, sound and scenery, that people have and seek more profound understanding of emotions and with the audience. The film is a message to people that they can tell others that they have seen, as well as for the Liberation of Rwanda, who did not get to tell their story (Fowler, 2005).

Paul talked about the potential of the film for distribution on the word genocide; it has received more publicity because of his 3 nominations at the Oscars, and its accuracy mapping history. But he also said the reality was much worse, but the director had to play it down, to get its American PG-13 rating. Directed by Terry George thought 12 and 13 years old have to deal with and learn about the genocide. Rusesabagina history took place in Kigali. The genocide began on April 6, 1994. The hero is Paul Rusesabagina, who is the manager of the Belgian owned Mille Collines hotel. Paul Rusesabagina is not working at the hotel at the time, but was retained as acting manager of the hotel where the white managers of the hotel left.
