FAMILY COMMUNITY AND SCHOOL RELATIONSHIPS

Improving Family Community and School Relationships

Introduction

Over time, it was felt that formal education of children belongs only to the teacher, which establishes a relational paradigm between the child and the educator. Today, we face the reality that parents are key players in the education of their children. Your participation is critical to the success of both the student and the school.

The National Association for Early Childhood Education (NAEYC, for its acronym in English) has established appropriate practices that provide, inter alia, the importance of developing reciprocal relationships with families, where there is mutual respect, cooperation, shared responsibilities and negotiating differences to achieve a common goal. This module, "Interrelationship between school, family and community, will be discussed under the ecological framework provides one of the many theories about the family. (Crocker, 2008)

Ecological theory states that people do not develop by themselves, but are affecting by all the different systems, which are part (e.g., family, school or educational program, the church, etc.). Influences also the way these elements interact with each other. For this reason, this author sees the interaction between home and school as a fact of great importance for the growing child. Given this and the existing reality, remains the responsibility of teachers to involve parents, family and community to enrich the formal education process of children and help them take over their role within it.

The active and committed participation of parents in the education of their children seeks to affect, positively, the development and strengthening of relations, the development of the child and the community. This should start from early childhood, formative years of child-to result in benefits for life. (Berns, 2007)

This reveals clearly that teachers face every day, an extraordinary challenge, to be responsible for building and maintaining reciprocal relationships between school, family and community. This task is intrinsically link to its commitment to offer the child the best educational experience possible. For this reason, it is necessary that preservice teachers learn and practice:

integration activities and participation among school, family and community;

Potential barriers to integrated work between school, family and community.
