Abstract

Purpose of Paper: Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) exacerbations are creating challenges in the life of number of patients in the form of their readmission to the hospitals. Studies that show the factors contributing to the hospital admission and readmission for the issue of the disease exacerbations are limited. This research paper is of a theoretical format written with an objective to analyze and summarize the results of the previous literature work conducted in the context of this paper's topic and identify the risk factors responsible for the hospital readmission of the COPD exacerbations patients.

Main Findings: The analysis of the studies reveals that the numbers of factors are responsible for the concerned issue. However, the most influential ones include the age of the patient, the physical activity that is a part of the patient's life, FEV 1 and the smoking environment.

Principle Conclusion: The effective dealing with the factors for Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation require an effective identification of the factors along with the formulation and implementation of intervening strategies that will improve the life of patients. Factors contributing to hospital readmission for a COPD exacerbation

Introduction

The whole globe is suffering from the issue of disability and mortality and one of the leading causes for such situation is the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). The statistics and studies have revealed that the factor occupies a third contributory rank to the cause of death and will become the fifth reason for the increased rate of disability by the year 2020. Recurrent exacerbations may be suffered by the patient suffering from the COPD disease showing an immense reduction in the proper functioning of the lungs_ a stage that is difficult to be recovered by small number of patients. The exacerbations make the person's quality of life to be marked as impaired, involving an element of reduction in the rate of survival along with the increased expenditure on the health care concerns., The increased healthcare expenditure is mainly a result of readmission to hospital that is considered to be an increased consequence of exacerbation. So, in an attempt to manage the stable COPD exacerbation becomes a primary objective. The increased percentage of the medical visits to hospital has been associated with an acute exacerbation that relates to the COPD disease. The knowledge in the context of the factors that relate to the hospital readmission for the COPD exacerbation is considered to be very limited. The hypothesis established for this research paper is that among the group of high risk and vulnerable aspects, the psychological, social and psychosocial factors along with a number of other featured factors are major contributors to the hospital readmission for the COPD exacerbations. This research study is of a theoretical nature based on the previous studies that were conducted in the context of the elements that are basically contributing to the readmission of the patients suffering from COPD exacerbations. The research paper will be providing ...
