Facing It, By Yusef Komunyakaa

Facing It," by Yusef Komunyakaa converses about a conflict which most, if not all Americans are well renowned with. The ever so contentious Vietnam Conflict, furthermore renowned as the Vietnam War. This poem was very well in writing, and I esteem all that was said in the context of the poem. "Facing It," talks about his visit to the Vietnam Memorial in Washington D.C., and his strong sentiments that he skilled while he was at the memorial. I can not envisage what the sentiments would be like to glimpse one of my friend's title etched in this wall?, whereas Tomas Van Putten can.

Tom Van Putten assisted nine years in the U.S. Army, two of which were expended in Vietnam. In a telephone interview with Tom, I inquired him if he had ever travelled to the monument. In detail, he did and he considered with me how hard it was to glimpse a dozen titles of men he knew that were put on that wall. "It's actually an awesome monument; it is hard recalling what it was like approaching home. I was decisively altered for life “(Van Putten).



Most of the content Mr. Van Putten and I talked about, alluded back to "Facing It."

Komunyakaa actually displays me that he is emotional about the monument by his visions that he sees when he is at the wall. "My very dark face fades / concealing interior the very dark granite" (1-2). Here I accept as factual he is recognising he should be on that wall. I seem as if he may be recalling a issue in time in Vietnam that he was engaged in an occurrence that should have cost him his life. Also, these are all names. His fading face makes me believe that he recognizes that there were no distinct rushes in that war. When I notified Mr. Van Putten about this part of the poem, he said "Yea, you are right. We all looked the same. We were all Americans."

"I said I wouldn't, dammit: no tears" (3-4). How could you not bawl at this scene. Hundreds, if not thousands of young individual Americans that Komunkyaa had combined with at one issue in time, or another, were just titles etched on a wall.
