Introduction

Most contradicters of Socrates are sophists, teachers of eloquence, teach youth the rich art of talking so believable about all things in addition to any consideration of personal conviction and respect for truth. It can be said that the thought of Socrates and Plato are mainly directed against the sophists and the ideas of the latter are linked to the idea of teacher Protagoras. The sophist Protagoras was probably away disciple of Heraclitus, famous for his philosophy of the future and for this vision of a tragic world in which “everything flows” and in which opposites are in constant struggle, allowing affirm that combat is the father of all things.

This philosophy of the future, Protagoras draws a lesson from relativism. One in and of itself is nothing; there is nothing we can rightly call or qualify. Thus, the essence of things varies according to the individual. Therefore, they are for me, so you seem like you are for, so all the wisdom of Protagoras can be summarized in famous formula. The man is the measure of all things, for those who are, as of his being, for those that are not, as its non-being. Thus, talking about True itself has no meaning since everything is relative to man, i.e., the individual one. So no wonder if another sophist, relativism of Protagoras extends a kind of nihilism skeptical, to say. If something exists that, something is unknowable (Beckman, 1979).
