Ethical Practices and Supply Management

Introduction

Globalization and digital convergence in the emerging knowledge society has raisedcomplex ethical, legal and societal issues. We are faced with complex and difficultquestions regarding the freedom of expression, access to information, the right toprivacy, intellectual property rights, and cultural diversity. It is well known that organizations are managed effectively implement comprehensive operational procedures and substantiated. As the size of the organization is large and the number of persons covered by these procedures, the greater they become important. Thus, in the case of organizations that are part of a vast interconnected network, such as Ontario's broader public sector, it is essential that documented procedures are in place to ensure the implementation of activities in an efficient, effective and accountable.

As we have been emphasizing throughout this text, ethical decisions are critical to the long-term success of any organization. However, the supply chain is particularly prone to slippage, as the opportunities to behave unethically are enormous. With a sales staff eager to sell, and purchasing agents who spend huge amounts, the temptation of unethical behavior is considerable. Many sellers end up making friends with their clients, making favors, taking them to dinner, or giving them small (or big) gifts. Define when a gift of friendship becomes a bribe is a challenge (Sims, 2002, p. 98-106).
