In A Doll's House, Ibsen has created a picture of the women that have sacrificed many things in their life to earn an objective. This has been done by all the women belonging different economic classes. The whole plot was based on the main character known as Nora who had to sacrifice a lot of things in her life for achieving a definite objective. She even assisted her husband known as Torvald. Nora's nanny had to leave her own children in order to take care for Nora and then later on for Nora's children. She told nanny that she is quite satisfied with her current job and would like to work as a caretaker in this house for several years. Though Nora did not have any financial problem as compare to other female characters, but she had to spend a difficult life in order to support her husband (DiYanni, 1990, 78).
There was one situation when Nora had to take a loan in order to help her husband, but she did not show it to him because he would not have liked this fact. Even, though, she did not have any wrong purpose for taking a loan but still due to the societal factors, it was not easy for her to communicate this fact. In addition, she had to work to pay off the loan because it was not possible for women to take the loan without husband's permission. This factor, unfortunately, made Nora vulnerable to Krogstad's blackmail. Nora even had to abandon her children, termed as the biggest sacrifice. The decision was not an easy one for Nora because she loved her children a lot and even took care of these children. Nora had a belief that nanny will look well after the children, and, it was in her interest to leave the children (Freire, 1987, 122).
Plot
There was a consensus among the three characters known as Nora, Torvald, and Dr. Rank who shared a belief that parent needs to groom their children well because any immoral act on their side can create a negative impact on the children. This issue becomes a disease for the children. In fact, Dr. Rank suffered from this disease because he was unable to fulfill some of these tasks as a father. Dr. Rank stated that his father carried out immoral acts like having affairs with several women that created a negative impact on his mind, and, had to suffer a lot because of these misdeeds. Torvald told Nora that children see their parents as a role model, and, any misdeed from their side, not viewed favorably by the children (Kress, 1997, 155).
Torvald told that he would not keep his children under the influence of this mother if would be found guilty in any dishonorable act. The play suggested that children do realize the value of their parents by looking after them. Nora even admitted this fact, but she chose to sacrifice herself for the disconsolate husband instead ...
