Eric Erikson presented a developmental theory in which he described developments that takes place throughout the life span (Austrian, 2008). In his theory he presented eight stages of life which are as follows:
st Stage - this stage is named as Trust vs. Mistrust and occurs during infancy.
nd Stage - this stage is known as Autonomy vs. Shame & Doubt and occurs during early childhood.
rd Stage - this stage is known as Initiative vs. Guilt and occurs during preschool days.
th Stage - this stage is known as Industry vs. Inferiority and occurs during school age.
th Stage - this stage is known as Identity vs. Role Confusion and occurs during Adolescence.
th Stage - this stage is named as Intimacy vs. Isolation and occurs during Young Adulthood.
th Stage - this stage is named as Generativity vs. Stagnation and occurs during Middle Adulthood.
th Stage - this stage is known as Ego Integrity vs. Despair and occurs during the stage of maturity.
According to Eric Erikson, this is the complete timeline of a person's life and every person goes through the different stages in his life. The development theory is a useful guideline as it outlines the major problems that an individual faces in a particular stage. Furthermore, it categorizes people in different phases of their lives and helps them cope up with the major problem that he or she is facing (Lerner, 2001). This theory outlines the problem so that the individual knows that every person in his age goes through the same problem and is able to work on the problem.
