Environment and development in developing countries

Introduction

There are ten countries in developing East Asia since 1960s, comprising of China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong in northeast Asia, and Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, and Thailand in southeast Asia that have gone through an unparalleled procedure of fast economic growth. They have even competed some of the technologically industrial countries. Though, there is some key dissimilarity among these countries when measured together on a modest scale. These countries characterize the most important edge of a capitalist and market based development strategy for globalization. The appeal of FDI and export of manufactured goods have created a positive impact on this region in terms of the worldwide economy and ecology. These countries give a huge chance for assessing the impact of globalization on the environment at domestic and international scale. This is the reason why the issues related to global environmental challenges have a strong connection with the development process in these countries. Therefore, all issues related to the environment and developments in developing countries have been discussed in detail.

Discussion

Before the commencement of the research, an assumption regarding Asia was that it is highly polluted continent in the world. However, the evidence collected regarding air quality among Asia, Africa, and Latin America continents revealed that air pollution in Asian cities, measured by the mean of matter in the air, was five times higher as compare to Latin America and nine times higher of Africa. In the same way, quality of untreated river water was also measured with the help of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) concentrations. The results of the principal rivers showed that the overall quality in Asia was estimated to be 2-3 times higher as compare to the other countries of the developing world (Repellin, 1999, 301).

Though, still environmental results had to undergo rigorous inspection because of the constant demand by various environmental agencies in the world. In countries like Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia, governments achieved a significant development in for improvement in the quality of urban ambient air. In most of the major cities in these countries, the quality of urban ambient air met the standards of United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The quality of ambient air in South Korea is even close to reaching standards of USEPA. China carried out a significant progress in an ambient air quality, but when it got measured from a polluted base, the quality was not very satisfactory. Both Indonesia and Thailand have achieved one requirement of quality standards in terms of urban ambient air, but they do meet the standards achieved by Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, and Malaysia. One Chinese minister said China's high economic growth, is due to the growth of export industry. Changes should speed up the development mode relying on promoting changes in consumption patterns, relying on independent innovation. Earlier, some experts believe that China's economic growth early mainly due to overheated investment in the excessive growth and investment is due to the excessive growth rate, the domestic real estate market overheating. Natural phenomena, that have occurred, in the summer of 2010, led to ...
