Emory University (Eng. Emory University) is a private research university in the United States, located in Atlanta, the State of Georgia. Founded as the College of Emory in 1836 in Oxford, Georgia, a small group of Methodists, and was named for John Emory, the famous bishop of the Methodist Church. In 1915 with the help of the president of Coca-Cola moved to a small college in a suburb of Atlanta and received university status. Its mission is "creating, maintaining, training and application of knowledge in the service of humanity".
In 2008 the university was awarded the presidential award for their dedication to community service, educational programs and civic activity (Astin, 2009).
History
In 1836 a small group of Methodists from the District of Newton has been provided for the establishment of a new town and college. City of Oxford was named in honor of the prestigious British university, who completed two of the founders of Methodism John and Charles Wesley. A college was named after John Emory, Bishop of the American Methodist Church, inspired them to found a college.
The events leading up to the base of Emory College began in 1783 when the state legislature of Georgia has included the organization of "college or seminary.” However, support for education in Georgia was a very sparse until the 1830's, while the Methodists were inspired not achievements in education in Germany, but then they decided to found a school for manual labor. At the conference, the Methodists in 1834 , a preacher known as "Uncle Allen "proposed to open more of their own schools and colleges not to support the State of Virginia , chairman of the conference was John Amory, who died in the crash of his coach in 1835. As a result of manual labor school opened the following year in Covington (English), Russian (Kuh, 2011).
