CHAPTER 1: INTRODUCTION
Background of the study
The study of ethics can be divided into two main categories, theoretical ethics and normative ethics (Antunes, 2008, 14). Performance appraisals measure employees on things such as productivity, communication, and teamwork, but currently fail to measure things such as trustworthiness, reliability, and responsibility. In order to develop a foundation on which to base this study, the review of the literature is divided into three parts: ethics-historical background, business ethics, and performance appraisals (Alderfer, 2002, 44).
Problem Statement
Hotels and other firms in hospitality industry, in recent times, have all suffered from people making poor choices when confronted with an ethical dilemma. Adhering to ethical standards, according to the media, is at an all time low in Pakistan today.
Purpose of the Study
The purpose of this study is to determine if it is appropriate to incorporate ethics in a business performance appraisal, whether it is apparent how ethics can be assessed in a performance appraisal, and whether incorporating ethics into performance appraisals is useful in evaluating an employee's performance.
Rationale of the Study
Ethics is a key concept in management, yet it's Meaning is Reduced to signify just goodwill. Ethics must be an important part of management, as companies should take actions based on objective and conclusive principles. Activities related to ethics Should Be included in all areas of the company (White, 2008, 29).
Aims and Objectives
The aims and objectives of this study will be
To highlight the importance of corporate ethics within an organisation
To elaborate the factors influencing an employee's performance
To discuss the link between ethical practices and their influence on employees' productivity in the context of Pakistan's hospitality industry, with a particular focus on Pearl Continental Hotel.
Research Questions
Following research questions will be included in this study
RQ1: How trustworthiness can be assessed in the performance appraisal for PC employees?
RQ2: Is responsibility a major factor in measuring performance of employees working in Pearl Continental Hotel, Pakistan?
RQ3: Is incorporating fairness into a performance appraisal useful in evaluating performance of PC's employees?
Scope and Significance of the Study
This study is significant because of the fact that it is one of few researches that highlight a connection between ethics and performance management of employees. This study solely focuses on Pakistan's hotel industry; that is why the scope of this study is very limited. Only employees working at Pearl Continental Hotel in Karachi Pakistan were selected, due to shortage of time therefore, employees of PC, working in any other city inside or outside Pakistan, were considered ineligible to participate in the survey.
