Introduction

Background of the Study

Cultural competence education of nurses have been suggested to positively improve knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors in both professional nurses and nursing students, which, in turn, will affect patient's (immigrants) treatment outcome in acute care settings. In theory, nurses providing culturally competent nursing care have the potential to increase access, improve the quality of care, and improve patient satisfaction, leading to better health outcomes for culturally diverse groups. In this paper, the author will examine the effectiveness of learning and education training programs designed to increase the cultural competence in professional nurses and nursing students and its impact on the patient's outcome.

Aims and Objectives

To determine the Effect of cultural competence training of nurses on health outcome of patients.

To determine the training methods used to increase the cultural competence of the nurses .To identify the existing gaps in the nurse education and training that hampers effective diverse patient care.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to determine the Effect of cultural competence training of nurses on health outcome of patients in acute care setting especially immigrants.

Research Questions

What is the significance of cultural competence training of nurses in health care setting especially immigrants?

What are the effect of culture on nurses and why cultural training is important to cater patients (immigrants)?

What are the tool to train nurses for understanding the cultural norms and health problems of patients (immigrants)?

Literature Review

The literature review will examine the aspects of cultural sensitivity, cultural competence and cultural competence training of nurses in health care setting.

Cultural competence

Cultural competence research includes cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity. In order to understand and develop a cultural training program, it is necessary to understand these three aspects.

Cultural awareness

Cultural awareness refers to the knowledge of integrated behavioral patterns of patients learned by the nurses, including what they think, say, do and perform as well as their system of attitudes, feelings and values.

Cultural sensitivity

Cultural sensitivity occurs when cultural diversity is recognized and respected by health professionals; when they realize that cultural factors are significant in health and disease. It should be understood that interpersonal competence is the key to cultural sensitivity.

Competence training

Competence training of nurses is essential in the health-illness process. In the Societies where people from different culture are living together, the nurses need to be prepared for efficient communication with their patients, especially immigrants. Furthermore they should know, and take into account, their culture references in relation to the health - illness process.

Method

In this section, the author will examine the methods and tools that can be used to amplify the cultural competency of nurses in acute care setting. Following are the methods that will be used in the study:
