Is Bilingualism Necessary for Every Student?

Thesis statement:

In recent decades companies have been involved in a rapid process of change at all levels (political, economic, ethical, cultural, etc.), which has led to the transformation of societies in global cities. However, the fact of living in global cities does not mean that reality is becoming more homogenous. Quite the opposite, since migration, particularly accentuated in the last fifteen years, create societies where the level of diversity is increasing. The danger, therefore, that this diversity becomes inequality.

Discussion

This is just one of the biggest challenges facing Latin America: inequality. To overcome this, the development of this society that has been called "knowledge" is to emphasize the importance of ensuring all citizens to quality education.

While we find many definitions of quality, I understand that we must put attention on the kind of education that can empower all people to access cultural tools needed to act in society on an equal footing. It is an education, therefore, has to compensate for inequalities that may be starting, and to be offered to each and all citizens without exception. It cannot be quality education elite education. (Cummins, 2007).

Advantages

It makes an individual more competent in the workforce. Being bilingual gives you the opportunity to interact with both sides of a nation, the chance to conduct business more efficiently with other countries. Being bilingual is not a non-language deficient but it is a language-endowed!

Bilingual education, in early childhood, promotes quality education and a better understanding of different cultures. There are two ways bilingual education is used. One way is when English speakers learn a second language, such as Spanish, by being in a classroom where both languages are used to teach students. The second is where non-English speaking individuals learn English with the help of their native language. Both ways help individuals learn a second language more effectively and increase chances of retaining what they learn. Bilingual education promotes learning ability, fluency, and cultural understanding (De, 2002).

Students who learn English as a second language acquire the same amount of English skills and most times more English skills than those children that are in all-English classes. Not only does this help the non English speaking children learn English more quickly it also helps them hold on to their native culture. This is very important to most parents that are not native or are recent generations from another country. This is also important because it promotes diversity and cultural understanding among the nation's youth. Learning a second language is done at an early age, most cases starting in kindergarten. This is done to because the children learn it faster, easier, and retain more of it (De, 2002). ”

Such a bilingual education or multilingual is an asset of linguistic, cultural and cognitive development.
