Introduction

The aviation industry continues to grow at an unprecedented rate, recently due to various reason, the airports of emerging economies have shown double digits in growth. Countries like India, Mumbai, Delhi have shown 20% growth in the previous year with a few European airports like Dublin, Hamburg and Oslo showing double-digit growth rates (Pilling 2007a)

Regardless of the small population and size of the republic of Ireland, Dublin airport is still considered as one of the busiest international airports with over 18.7 million passengers in 2011, 171 routes with 62 airlines for the year with a 76% fill rate. According to the guardian UK, Dublin was ranked 80 among the world 100 busies airports. However, Terminal 2 was opened in 2010 with a size of 75,000 sq meters, with a cost of €395 million and capacity of handling up to 15 million passengers per year. Nevertheless, this report is focusing on the check in process passengers pass through at departure, with a focus on existing facilities and procedures and areas of potential development in regards to time minimizing or efficiency of operation. According to DAA arrival check-in could take at least 90 minutes prior to flight departure and further 30 minutes if parking a car. Self-service check-in service is available with certain airlines, As well as Internet check-in facilities. Apart from the check in facility used by the passenger, all have to walk through the security check in. Boarding time and gate number are shown 45 minutes before departure. In general, Terminal 2 enjoys most of the essential needs like pharmacy, Internet access, luggage storage, prayer room and basic services but nothing superior about the available service such Cinemas, fitness centres or even sleeping capsules like other airports.

Passengers: Due to the economic decline in the past three years, the passengers numbers going through the Dublin airport dropped significantly even though More than 22.7 million passengers travelled through Dublin, Cork and Shannon airports during 2011, The graph below explains this better, obtained from the DAA(Dublin Airport Authority) website

From the graph above, it can be seen that Passenger numbers at Dublin Airport increased every year during the 10 years between 1998 and 2008, by an average of 10.2% per annum from around 11.6 million to over 23.4 million. Passenger numbers dropped however during the subsequent two years to around 18.4 million in 2010, with a small increase of 1% in 2011
