Domestic Violence

Bradley, Fiona; Smith, Mary and O'Dowd, Tom 2002. Reported frequency of domestic violence: cross sectional survey of women attending general practice, Retrieved on September 19; 2009 from (http://www.bmj.com/cgi/content/full/324/7332/271)

Perceived Aim Of The Research

The purpose of this article Since the problem of wife abuse undoubtedly exists at this time, it is important to understand how to intervene in and treat it.

To determine the effects of violence by a partner or spouse among women attending general practice and its relationship with the respondents, demographic and personality characteristics, the frequency of inquiry about violence by general practitioners and women's views on the usual questioning about domestic violence, general practitioners. Is wife abuse a result of witnessing family violence as a youth? Do children who experience family violence firsthand become more likely to commit violence in their families of procreation? The specifics of intergenerational violence transmission are still largely unknown, but of great interest lies in knowing how to prevent intimate abuse in the first place, so that intervention and treatment become less necessary.

In terms of "what works" for female victims of intimate abuse, the counseling agency should articulate the difficulties in identifying appropriate outcome measures of success in regard to programs for female victims. (Domestic Violence Research Update, 2004)

For children small therapy groups (of 5 to 10 members each) in shelter should be provided in which children can begin to identify and to explore their feelings. This is a starting point, because often a lesson learned early on by children in a home where domestic violence is prevalent is that self-expression is dangerous and that environmental responses to emotions are unpredictable. Another lesson learned by many children from homes in which domestic violence takes place is that what is happening must be kept secret.

Setting Of The Research

To examine the spectrum of domestic violence, article constructed scales of severity for violent incidents (20 questions) and controlling behaviour (eight questions). For each question, the score ranged from 0 to 3 (never, rarely, sometimes, or often). The violent incident scale thus had a maximum score of 60 and the controlling behaviour scale a maximum score of 24. The sampling plan used a multiple-wave sampling approach with modified respondent-driven sampling, chain referral, and targeted sampling. Respondent-driven sampling has been used successfully with hidden or hard-to-reach populations, and can effectively reduce the biases often associated with chain-referral sampling.

The Sample

Questions encompassing these dimensions of empowerment were drawn from the development and public health literature, piloted, and adapted to the Ireland Dublin context. Nine quantitative indicators of empowerment were developed: self-confidence, financial confidence, challenging gender norms, autonomy in decisionmaking, perceived contribution to the household, communication within the household, relationship with partner, social group membership, and participation in collective action. In addition, 7 focus group discussions were conducted with 46 intervention participants to gain a deeper understanding of how they defined and experienced empowerment in the context of the article.
