Digital Aesthetics

Introduction

Aesthetics is the branch of philosophy that aims to establish the general principles of art and beauty."

The word "aesthetic" has broadly come to indicate sensibilities of perception, be they physical or mental.

A digital aesthetic acknowledges the imprint and residue of digital/electronic technology on its creative product. A discussion of digital aesthetics would seek to explain and evaluate the creative product of digital technology by examining its various factors/relationships in their appropriate contexts, and by identifying that which is unique to digital artworks/processes.

"Aesthetics" are some generally agreed upon ideas about what makes effective communication in a given medium. Establishing an aesthetical sensibility requires that you look beyond your own personal likes and dislikes to evaluate a work within the medium in which it is presented.

A Haptic Digital Aesthetics

Touch and digital performance

This examines the expressive possibility of digital media performances that involve technologies of touch. This analysis includes examples of artworks divided into three separate 'moments' - the 'skin' and the discourse of surface; the 'flesh' and the notion of technological extension and prosthesis; and the 'body' and its motility, the way interactive touch is performed both on stage and online.

In digital performance there are some interesting developments that occur whereby the body becomes displaced, and the senses distorted. This refashioning of the body in digital space has implications for theories of embodiment and of body morphology. Some digital performances positively engage discourse of fluidity in its evocation of the virtual environment, even the way the body navigates and moves around the virtual world, not by mastering space but by being penetrated by it.

Digital art is one that offers digital worlds, i.e., worlds that are only possible to create and recreate through their own virtual reality systems of the so-called cyberspace. Digital worlds are not like the worlds of nature are artificial man-made worlds through computers. As artifacts of traditional art (painting, theater, music, literature, poetry and sculpture), all there is imagination, but the digital worlds have the potential to implement ideas and deep emotions in a way that other media could not do. Worlds in any case could not be expressed without digital technology. (Picard, 2005)

Discontinuity

The digital mute is discontinuous, there is no predetermined route and therefore promote choice and free decision on interest.

Interactivity

The digital experience is not passive. Demand participation. The work is not defined by the job "privilege" of an artist on a high pedestal, but by the interaction between work and public.
