Differences Between Romanticism And Transcendentalism
Explain the differences between Romanticism and Transcendentalism.
Romanticism
You cannot define Romanticism in the univocal sense because it is a complex phenomenon that has different attributes depending on countries in which it develops. In the Romantic Movement there is no specific reference to a closed system of ideas that can fully define, but it is rather on a "way of feeling" in which artists of the time to adapt their way of expressing themselves artistically, thinking and living. Romanticism as a cultural movement is of German origin, and it grew in England, following the decline of the Enlightenment. As a reaction to Enlightenment and Neoclassicism, i.e. rationality and the cult of classical beauty, romanticism opposed spirituality, emotion, fantasy, imagination, and above all the affirmation of the individual characters of each artist (Masson, Scott, p. 33). The term "Romanticism" was applied first by Friedrich von Schlegel (1772) to the literature, which he considered "modern" and opposed to the "classical". August Wilhelm von Schlegel writes (in the work of dramatic literature course) which was a term more than adequate to define the movement which had arisen towards the 1790 because it alluded to the Romance language , originated from a mixture of German dialects with Latin (Masson, Scott, p. 33). The diversity and heterogeneity was representative, according to him, romantic era, where the man was no longer intact, and the only and sufficient to itself as in classical antiquity, when it was preached the Latin concept of ' self-sufficiency. In fact, according to philosophers such as Schopenhauer, who are based in part Johann Gottlieb Fichte , man, be finite, tends to infinity, that is in constant search of a good or an infinite pleasure, while in the finite world at his disposal finds only limited resources.
Transcendentalism
The transcendentalism is a philosophical and poetic movement that developed in North America in the early decades of the Nineteenth Century, in which, starting with the premise of transcendental Kant as the only reality, he was expressing a reaction to rationalism and an exaltation of the individual in dealing with the nature and society; reasons that ultimately can be linked to the ideology romantic, even if the transcendentalism itself as vigorous affirmation of the originality of American culture against the European Union. The major representatives of the culture and philosophy of Transcendentalism are Ralph Waldo Emerson (the 1803rd - 1882) and Henry David Thoreau (Gura, Philip, p. 7-8). The reading of Emerson influenced Friedrich Nietzsche and this was through the transcendentalism which has been poured into the European culture. On the other hand, very large influence on Emerson was the work of the thinker Scotsman Thomas Carlyle, who (especially with his Sartor Resartus, published the first volume in the United States just by Emerson) served as a mediator between the German literature (Fichte and Goethe first) and the American thinker. Other transcendentalists were: William Ellery Channing, Bronson Alcott and Margaret Fuller (Gura, Philip, p. 7-8).
