The term “diabetes mellitus” or “diabetes” identifies a group of metabolic disorders characterized by high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood, caused by defects in insulin secretion or action, or to a combination of both. Diabetes mellitus, commonly called diabete, was identified for the first time as a disease associated with sweet urine and excessive loss of muscle mass. Diabetes is a chronic metabolic disorder caused by the absence or malfunctioning of insulin. This disease is characterized by high blood glucose (hyperglycemia) in the blood. Insulin is a hormone produced in the pancreas, which is involved in the regulation of all metabolic processes occurring in the human body. For glucose could be a source of energy, it is necessary to appropriate the amount of properly fulfilling its function of insulin. This paper is intended to provide a literature review of several books and research articles on the diabetes. An introduction of the disease, classifications, causes, prevention, symptoms, and possible treatments to this disease will be covered in this research paper.
Research Methodology
The research methodology used for preparing this research paper is the secondary research, and the research approach is the qualitative research method. Most of the information for this research paper has been retrieved from the books, research papers, and online articles on “diabetes”.
Literature Review
Diabetes is a metabolic syndrome of multiple origin, caused by lack of insulin and / or the inability of insulin to properly exercise its effects. Insulin is produced by the pancreas and is responsible for the maintenance of glucose metabolism. The lack of this hormone causes deficit in glucose metabolism and hence diabetes. It is characterized by high rates of blood sugar (hyperglycemia) permanently.
Diabetes is actually a misleading term. Basically diabetes is not caused by the consumption of sugar. Of course it is good to pay attention to the consumption of sugar, because excess sugar leads to obesity, and can be a cause of diabetes. Also, the word diabetes not means you should eat no sugar if you have diabetes. In healthy people, the body regulates blood sugar with insulin. When eating sugary products coming soon much sugar in the blood. If the body that sugar does not immediately need, the pancreas makes extra insulin to which the sugar level in the blood is checked.
In people with diabetes, insulin is either not produced (type 1) or the body not responding to insulin (type 2). This means that the blood sugar level in the body is reduced. The blood sugar remains in the blood flow around while it cannot be used. This can be uncomfortable in the short term, in the long term it is harmful to the body and can even affect the life expectancy. The timely detection of diabetes is very important. With good diabetes medications may well be kept under control.
