Part 1: Video: How diabetes affects your blood sugar
This animated documentary posted by the Mayo Clinic staff provides us with an in-depth analysis of how diabetes affects the person's blood sugar level. This short documentary gives us knowledge regarding how this disease enters in human body and affect the sugar level in the blood. The reason for this problem could be numerous, it could be because the human body loses its ability to develop adequate amount of insulin or cells in the body could stop responding to the insulin, which is being produced by the body. Furthermore, the video also elaborates that diabetes is a metabolic disorder, the process that converts the food we eat into energy. Insulin is shown as the most important factor in this process. During digestion, the video shows how food is broken down to create glucose, the main source of fuel for the body. This glucose enters the bloodstream, where insulin allowed to enter the cells (Mayo Clinic staff, 2011).
The other key points shown in this video are the different types of diabetes and its symptoms. Most patients have to deal with type 2 diabetes. It is characterized by the fact that the body produces large amounts of insulin, but it is not able to convert sugar into energy. Type 1 diabetes occurs mainly in children and adolescents, and it is caused, in contrast to type 2 diabetes, due to insufficient insulin production by the body or the complete lack of this hormone. Gestational diabetes continues until birth and is usually caused by physiological changes occurring during pregnancy. This video is comparatively effective, as it provides visual presentation of the origins of diabetes (Mayo Clinic staff, 2011).
