Detail history of student's performance on the NCLEX

Introduction

NCLEX refers to National Council Licensure Examination, in which nurses in United States of America are licensed through this examination. NCLEX are of two types mainly NCLEX-PN and NCLEX-RN. NCLEX examinations are owned and developed by the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN). Such types of examinations are administered under NCSBN on behalf of its board members consisting of members of nursing boards in 50 different states. These include four U.S territories such as American Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, District of Columbia and the Virgin islands. A nursing candidate needs to pass its appropriate NCLEX examination I order to qualify for the nursing job. NCLEX-RN is for the nurses who are registered whereas NCLEX-PN for the nurses who are practical and vocational. These examinations are usually held to test the skill, capabilities and knowledge that is important for the nurse to enroll as a nursing staff and for the public protection.

Discussion

According to the test preparations and the way questions are asked in NCLEX test, I believe that nursing students of my caliber will perform good enough to qualify. It is because with the technological progress and advancement in medicine and science, competency requirements have increased as patient safety is greatly emphasized. This has led to an increase in passing standards. (Wendt & Kenny, 2007). Therefore, students failing at NCLEX is a growing problem. In order to understand the students who are failing at NCLEX-RN and their complexity, systems theory has been used which helps to learn about the system of nursing education and their interdependency. This perspective clearly shows the problems that are related to flaws present in student outcome measures and perceived learning gaps. NCLEX-RN success is also difficult to predict as most of the students, prior to examinations, leave their teaching systems. This makes it vulnerable to other influencing variables. The theory of student's approach to learning (SAL) was used to help identify various effective strategies. The nursing student learning system is another part of teaching system, which is a parallel teaching system. This enables students to gain skills, knowledge and clinical judgment so they can practice safely. This includes the participation in clinical experiences, studying, reading and attending classes. It is common to hear the faculty saying that they have never predicted that the student will fail. They conclude that there are no easy answers to the question why students failed to achieve success as the problem lies with the student and not the faculty. It is because when a student leaves an education system, a student actually leaves the nursing education system influence. At this point in time, factors from other systems influence the student and eventually its performance on the exam. During this time period, students get involved in other activities and are deviated from the main objective and will also not participate in tests for several weeks. However, during this time period, most probably, a student will indulge ...
