Background
Diversity in the Workplace is a recent concept that has recognized the indirect issues accruing from the impact of globalization with a focus on the corporate world. The concept of diversity at workplaces in US is a well embraced owing to the fact that United States of America is a product of diversified society. This paper seeks to expound on the definition, the benefits and challenges of this concept, the management consideration as well as relevant data to support the need to embrace certain critical changes at the workplace.
Ethnicity introduces various types of beliefs in the workplace. One of these is the hierarchical belief where it is considered that it must be followed at all times. Regardless of the nature and development of a situation, one is meant to believe that there is no choice and thus one has to do everything to appease his or her superior, this may be viewed as loyalty. An individual who hails from a more influential or educated background may however possess a different point of view where he or she believes that in order to succeed one has to outshine those above them and steal the limelight. Such may be described as go-getters and hard workers as they are able to rise up the ranks faster and may have many enemies while climbing up the corporate ladder. Workforce Diversity
From Robinson's (2006) discussion, gender, another component of diversity plays a substantial role in the make up of a company. Women continually seek equality in the job status, pay, and respect and to achieve this they are force to put in twice as much as their male counterparts. It is worth noting that the input of women in today's workforce is significant. Currently, there is a positive trend in women employees in various capacities with considerable increases in the number of dual income families and single working mothers. This has been partly influenced by changes in the family structures that previously defined the traditional family roles.
The role that one plays in the workplace also differentiates individuals. The institution or organization is a unified entity consisting of subsets with different required roles.
