DECISIONS SUPPORT SYSTEM

DECISIONS SUPPORT SYSTEM

Executive Summary

A Decision Support System is an information system constructed to help the user in forming decisions at personnel, departmental and organizational level. The DSS is a dedicated system incorporated to reduce manual working, making the functionality automated and reducing the calculations at user end.

The following report suggests the implementation of DSS by the ABC Corporation. The report proceeds in a sequential manner. The first part of the report accounts for the usage of a DSS, its history, working, types and advantages.

The second part of the report targets the problems faced by the company. It explains the usage of DSS with respect to these problems. The report further evaluates the benefits DSS will render to the company and individuals.

The last segment introduces the obstacles which might arise after the implementation of the DSS and finally evaluate the solutions for the predicted problems and overall comparison whether to implement the DSS is feasible or not?

Decision Support System

Introduction

In evaluating the need and use of Decision support System for our organization, we must know the benefits it has rendered to other industries and company across the globe. Before, viewing the use and advantage of incorporating a Decision support system we will study the evolution and history of Decision Support Systems.

History of DSS

The ideology of Decision support System is assumed to be as old as 1947, when Simon introduced this idea in his illustration The New science of management Decision (Hosack, 2012, p. 317). The ideology was defined due to two research parameters; theoretical studies of organizational decision and the specialized work on interactive computers. The two universities, which introduced research for these systems, were Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Carnegie Institute of Technology.

In 1960s with the emergence of main frames, many leading industries incorporated them to process undemanding information through laborious work. In the 1970s, considerable stress was given on the development of DSS as to facilitate each department of organizations.

A DSS is an interactive information system, which uses the data provided from the user to provide him with purposeful information and reports. The data required by the DSS is data collection, Data formatting, Tools and Databases.

Data Collection

The data collection segment of the DSS feeds in untreated data from multiple sources to the DSS. The sources include Aims and objectives of the company, sales reports, inventory reports, market research data, human resource data, supplier information, projected outcomes and current assets of the ...
