DECS has been engaged by a company, CPResorts, which owns a range of holiday resorts throughout Australia. They recently opened a new facility, CPResorts Forster, and spent a considerable amount of money on promotion. The business plan was to position the resort as an “upmarket” complex that would appeal to families. It seems the resort has a range of facilities including boat hire, bike hire, beauty and massage services, restaurants and a small range of boutique shops all of which were planned to generate considerable revenue over and above the accommodation charges. The company is now interested in how successful this promotional campaign was by investigating what types of customers have been attracted to CPResorts Forster, how long they stay and how much they spend. In outlining what is required, the CEO of CPResorts has stressed that the central question to be addressed is: What type of customer has been attracted to CPResorts Forster, how much are they spending at the resort over and above their accommodation costs and has CPResorts been successful in meeting their key performance indicators (KPI's) stated in the business plan as:
1. More than 50% of their customers stay for a full week (i.e. seven nights)
2. The average customer spends more than $260 per day in excess of accommodation costs. CPResorts Forster collected data for a sample of recent customers and these data would seem to be able to shed some light on this question. You have been given the responsibility of providing a statistical analysis of these data and for producing an associated report.
Given variables in the data set are:
ID = booking identifier
Income = 1 if family income > $80,000, = 0 if family income < $80,000
People = number of people in the booking party
Length = length of stay represented by number of nights
Age = age in years of person making the booking
Expenditure = total amount in dollars spent per booking over and above accommodation costs
Dependent and independent Variables
The terms dependent and independent variables are commonly used in experimental studies, where it is necessary to manipulate several variables. In this way, the "independent variable” is defined a variable that does not depend on any other variable.
Some variables are assumed to be "dependent" on the actions of the object of an experiment or experimental conditions. These variables may implicitly contain some information about the behavior or reaction of the object during the experiment. Independent variables - are variables whose values ??can be controlled, and dependent variables can only be measured or recorded.
Income and Age are the two independent variables in this experiment and Length and Expenditure are the two dependent variables in this experiment.
