The main focus of the research is on “Culturally Competent communication with traditional Nigerian Muslim patients” and its relation with “Issues and Considerations for Nurses”. The research also analyzes many aspects of “Culturally Competent communication with traditional Nigerian Muslim patients” and tries to gauge its effect on “Issues and Considerations for Nurses”. Finally, the research describes various factors which are responsible for “Culturally Competent communication with traditional Nigerian Muslim patients” and tries to describe the overall effect of “Culturally Competent communication with traditional Nigerian Muslim patients” on “Issues and Considerations for Nurses”.

Culturally Competent communication

This research expands the knowledge of the role of culture and cultural difference in medical encounters. In this research, we examine how patients communicated information from their life world, and whether “cultural” narratives provided by patients would cause barriers to treatment, as assumed by cultural competence models. In light of this research, I propose measures to redefine cultural competence. In this research, I will be discussing the Culturally Competent communication with traditional Nigerian Muslim patients. In the perspective of nursing, we will discuss the issues faced by nurses and how do they overcome those issues.

Background Information

Nursing is a discipline and the academic profession past practice have been formed by women. Nursing has historically been viewed as an extension of the role of women in the family. Organized care has its roots in religious orders of men and women, such as the Templars, from century to the era of Florence Nightingale, considered the mother of professional care. Nurses, with a planned educational program began with the work of Nightingale, one of the two daughters of an English family wealth and influence (Arellano, 2004).

Needs and significance

Advocates for cultural competence believe that introducing culturally sensitive practices decreases cultural and linguistic barriers and increases certain patient outcomes, such as patient understanding, satisfaction, follow-up, and treatment compliance (Barry, 2002). Culture competence models incorporate actions to manage both linguistic and cultural differences between patients and the health care system. Linguistic competence is described as an essential component of cultural competence and is concurrently described as being the bare minimum of culturally competent strategies (Barrett, 2004)

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship of nurses with Nigerian Muslim patients. Cultures of the countries vary. It is necessary to understand the cultural perspective of patients in health care. Linguistic competence occurs at two levels, the institutional and individual. Institutions can provide language specific written materials such as patient sign-in and billing documents, posted signs, and education pamphlets; nurses can ensure competence if they are bilingual or use medically trained interpreters to overcome language barriers.
