Abstract

Research has found that parenting roles across the nation differs due to the influence of cultural diversity and ethnicity (Hill, 2006). Understanding parenting practices is complicated since it varies among multicultural and ethnic groups, which reveals the complex social structure of behavior and decision making process amongst the different culture and ethnic groups (Serrano & Hou, 1996). External and internal factors can affect how one may raise a child. Factors such as adapting to a new environment, language barriers, financial constraints, traditional beliefs and discrimination can pose a problem for those trying to adapt to a new setting. The paper underlines the study to indicate the differences in parenting practices among multicultural and ethnic families. Secondly, the focus of the paper is to divulge the difficulties parents face during adaption phase, and addresses methods to tackle them. A thorough analysis is made on ethnicity and socio economic status, along with barriers of obtaining opportunities based on socioeconomic status of parents. It entails the linking of relationship between the associations of poverty with single-parent households in comparison to two parent households.

Introduction

From the day, an infant is welcomed to the world, it is crucial for the parents feed, clean and nurture the infant in its early developmental stage. This allows the infant to grow into a toddler, whom the parents teach basic skills, such as walking, speaking, and cleaning themselves. As the toddler continues to grow, the parent's duty changes, since the child becomes more independent. These phases shape the role of parenting, as the needs of the child differs with the growing age. Therefore, parents must mold their role of parenting from over protected during infant years to just guarding during the years of adolescence. This correlation applies to families who immigrate to a different country, compelling them to adapt to different cultural and social behaviors. However, cultural differences often result in conflict, as one wants to preserve their cultural identity. The challenge for multicultural families is in the cultural retention while assimilating into the adoptive country (James, 1999). This evolves into shit in the role of parenting and relation between children and parent upon immigration and settlement (Kilbride, 2001). This demonstrates the influence of the influence of the cultural and ethnicity on the parenting, since coping with the host culture and retaining one's own culture results in to the newer roles and responsibilities of parents and children.

Parenting style is depending on factors such as ethnicity, income, religion and socioeconomic status, which is a driving force of how families raise and behave towards their children. The major difference in children and their upbringing is realized by disparities among the annual household income, which also plays an influential factor in determining the power the parent has over their children.
