Cozumel has its own mini international airport. Life there revolves around two key activities: scuba diving and cruise ships making a port of call. Yet a strong sense of family and community continues to prevail there. There are less than 100,000 people on the island, a couple of thousand of whom are Americans and the rest of whom are mostly Maya, Yucateacan, and Mexican from elsewhere in the country. There is just one town, San Miguel de Cozumel; to the north and south lie resorts (McFadden, 2009).

The rest of the shore is deserted and predominantly rocky, with a scattering of small sandy coves that you can have all to yourself. Because, Cozumel remains a frequent stop on the cruise ship circuit, the town's waterfront is lined with jewelry stores and duty free and souvenir shops. This and the area around the town's main square are about as far as most cruise ship passengers venture, and they were usually just there for a few hours in the middle of the day. Unfortunately, there is no way to travel directly between Cozumel, but you can get from one to the other by traveling via Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

Cozumel Island is unique because, or it is high level or mammalian endemism and contains a distinct biota within the Yucatan Peninsula. As is the trend for island fauna, Cozumel is home to a number of mammals that are smaller, or dwarf, compared to their mainland ancestors. These island taxa present several conservation dilemmas. As Cozumel's environment is rapidly altered, a conflict exists between animal conservation objectives and the tremendous pressures of economic development, which underlie the human population increases (Paxton, 2001).

We went into the most important city of Naples, the largest in the South of Italy and with a long history due to its strategic location for trade and control of the Mediterranean. Our first visit is the magnificent Royal Palace, where we visited the imposing interior with newly refurbished rooms.
