CRITICAL EVALUATION

Critical Evaluation of 3 Journal Article

Critical Evaluation of 3 Journal Article

Introduction

The purpose of this study is to expand the boundaries of our knowledge by exploring some relevant facts and figures relating to the 3 articles provided. For this paper, we will conduct critical evaluation of the three articles. The first article is about the detection of lies by police officers. A number of police officers were examined for this research to evaluate the accuracy of detecting suspect's lies. These police officers attempted to detect truths and lies told by suspects during their videotaped police interviews (Mann, 2004, pp. 137-149).

The second article is related to the Unethical Behavior and Motivated Reasoning of different people in different situation. This article is primarily focused towards the behaviors of those people who are good or pretend to be good and sometimes do bad things or adapt unethical behavior (Hartwig, 2007, pp. 208-219).

The third article is focused towards examining the non-verbal behaviors of police officers during interrogation with violators. The nonverbal cues to deception that are quite reliable, though, are that liars move their arms, hands and feet less than truth tellers and that liars make fewer gestures to illustrate their speech. Furthermore, liars tend to speak in a higher pitch than truth tellers (Bersoff, 1999, pp. 28-39).

Strengths or Weaknesses in the Methodologies

In the methodology of the first article, there are two issues or weaknesses in the methodology of the research. First, the law enforcement officers were given inappropriate number lies and truth to be investigated, which, eventually, made it difficult for the researcher to compute the total accuracy score for both the lies and truth of suspects. Moreover, due to miscalculation, the interpretation of the accuracy score also became difficult. Secondly, the lie detection task turned out to be a realistic approach, but the difference in some of the aspects were observed in contrast to the real-life detection strategies of the police interviews. For instance, in the normal approach, police conducts interviews rather than just watching it. However, our research proved that interviews do not always prove to be the best lie detecting technique (Mann, 2004, pp. 137-149).

The methodology presented in the second article carries some points of strength, for example, using a logistic regression procedure to analyze the data for research models the effects of gender participant and numerous anti-neutralization manipulations in refunding a fee over payment to the participant. The appropriate regression method in the case is the logistic regression used to obtain a variable outcome in the form of binary or dichotomous. In the context of parametric model, the regression method differs from the linear regression and under lies the assumption that both are suitable for non-normal distribution pattern of the dichotomous data. A part from these differentiating aspects, the applied methods within the analysis use logistic regression following the similar principles of the linear regression (Hartwig, 2007, pp. 208-219).
