Research Question

“Does marriage and strong attachment with spouse directly forces an individual to desist for using marijuana, or whether the effect of marriage is indirectly related to the inability to link with delinquent peers?”

Theoretical framework

This article is based on two distinctive theoretical frameworks, which are how and why marital attachments brings change in the life of a delinquent individual and how it stops them from using marijuana. Marriage is taken as an independent variable, as it is affecting the use of marijuana. The use of marijuana is taken as dependent variable as the consumption rate varies due to the marital relation. Every single person has a natural preference to engage in criminal behavior unless he/she is restrained from it. Social control theory has been discussed in detail, which states that the social bonds among institutions like families, partners and schools help in identifying their tendency to get involved in criminal activities. It have been clearly stated in most of the researches that the marital status helps in desistence form the use of marijuana (Maume et al., 2005).

The science of studying crime on societal and individual levels, directly refers to the field of Criminology. Increasing use of illegal drugs like marijuana, alcohol is creating great problems in the society. The theoretical framework seeks to understand how an individual begins doing criminal activities and how he becomes desist through marital attachment. It is defined in this article that the desistance may be accomplished by using number of ways within the confines of a marriage; the strong attachment with spouses does or does not stop a delinquent person from using marijuana or other closely linked drugs? It is deeply discussed in this article by Maume, Ousey, & Beaver. The literature of this article has identified the reasons and consequences related to marijuana's use and also the changes that come in to being due to marriage. Recent work has indicated that the marriage contributes to desistance from using illegal drugs and other closely linked criminal activities (Blau, 1977). The literature has highlighted that how a good marital relation impact the overall personality of a delinquent peer and what stops him/her from using those illegal drugs.

Some researchers have indicated that the informal social controls are related to desistance from offensive behaviors and this practically noted by conducting variety of the researches. The relation to employment and marriage can stop delinquent peers to prohibit the use of marijuana. It is very much important that the relationships among the marriage coupler should be of optimum quality (Maume et al., 2005).
