Introduction
Leadership and management are widespread phenomena of the business world. Leadership can be defined as the social influence process where a person is able to procure the support and aid of others in the achievement of a mutual task. However, the theories and views about management and leadership changed with the passage of time from the notion of “need to be told” to “collaborative or participative approach.”
Discussion
Classical management and leadership theories effort in identifying general rules of organization and management, which must pertains to all enterprise types. Few classical management theory aspects are still applicable. A logical approach of management in progressing efficiency has some validity. Contemporary theories consist of perception that the most appropriate approach to leadership and management differ based on situations, and what fits in one situation is not inevitably the best in all other situations. This approach to leadership and management is presented by Drucker Peter and refers to “contingency theory” (Rowold & Heinitz, 2007, pp.121-133).
Classical leadership theories and management structure has advantages refers to an apparent hierarchy of organization with three levels of management. Each group of management has its responsibilities and objectives. The top management is typically the CEO or BOD who are responsible for the long-term objectives. The managers at middle management watch over the supervisors, set goals for department based on budget approvals. Supervisors are at the lowest level who keeps an eye on daily activities, provide training to employees and address issues of employee. The levels of responsibilities and leadership are well-defined and clear.
