The Role of Communication in Crisis Management

Introduction

The Crisis Communication Plan is often attributed by requisites of Crisis Management, which is part along with other specific operational plans. There are reasons for this scenario, which is necessary to be enlightened for a better understanding of not only the benefit of the actions in a crisis, but the role of business and institutional communication (Banks, 2002). The first reason could be that the overall objective of the Crisis Communication Plan, which is exactly the same as Crisis Management: to restore normalcy in operations of the company or institution, as soon as possible in order ensure business continuity, protecting the assets of corporate image and reputation of the organization (Banks, 2002). While the goal is identical, the responsibilities of the Crisis Management and Communication Plan are very different.

In the early days of humanity, our ancestors gathered food for survival, which is the first production. This clearly shows that the first tool was the accounting administration. It was essential to know for sure how it was that was collected, then distribute to the community where they lived (Branch, 1994). For many centuries was the only accounting administration tool used civilizations. Then others were introduced, such as production, when the man ceased to be nomadic and socially organized. Subsequently, to barter and the introduction of money-and thus finance ", in more modern times came the industrial production, credit, partnerships, legal issues and contracts, concepts that were added to the business as a tool (Branch, 1994).

In the late nineteenth century, with large industrial production, trade unions are created and introduced industrial relations or human resources as a management tool. In the twentieth century begins to manage the research for new technologies that made them more competitive. Meanwhile, advertising and marketing are born under the wing of the radio and television. Finally, in the '50s and '60s in the world, and in Chile in the '60s, '70s and '80s, is beginning to introduce information technologies, while in the 80s or 90s there is a new management tool: communication (Connell, 2002). Prior to the 80, where we see a simulation method crisis, most companies consider avoiding any reflection on the crisis, grounds as more or less convincing arguments that, given that crisis, by definition, they occur when least expected, it is futile to try prepare, or that the company should represent itself to avoid scenarios negative because they threaten to tarnish the image of winning (say widespread among managers) and stating that the evocation of the crisis threaten to traumatize the members of the company (Connell, 2002).

It is not uncommon to find other professionals responsible for developing specific plans to support the Crisis Management; the professionals mislead their way and believe they have the responsibility for managing communications. Nevertheless, they must meet the emergency, recovery or protection equipment to resolve the issue.
